Mobile PC users will have a handful of data-ready cellular phones to choose from in 1996 as Nokia Mobile Phones Inc. and Pacific Communication Sciences Inc. ready new devices.
Both companies will give glimpses of their respective phones at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January.
Nokia will unveil at the show the Nokia 232N, which melds voice capabilities with the ability to connect to notebook PCs, enabling users to wirelessly send and receive E-mail, faxes, and data over the narrowband-AMPS cellular network, sources close to the company said.
The phone is due from Nokia later this year, sources said.
The 232N will precede a forthcoming Nokia "smart" phone due at the end of 1996 or early 1997, which will be based on the Global System for Mobile communications network, sources said.
The device will incorporate Geoworks Inc.'s GEOS operating system and a high-resolution screen that's larger than current Nokia phone displays, and it will support up to 160 characters, they said.
In addition to voice capabilities, the phone will enable users to compose short messages through the device's built-in keypad. It also will provide built-in Internet access support as well as wireless send/receive fax, E-mail, and data capabilities, sources said.
Officials at Nokia's Tampa, Fla., offices declined to comment on unannounced products.
