Phones change face of communications

SMART PHONES CHANGING THE FACE OF PERSONAL COMMUNICATIONS

Geoworks' CEO Gordon Mayer to deliver vision of smart phones' key role in tapping the power and potential of the Internet at CTIA's Wireless Apps '96 conference

ALAMEDA, Calif. (August 26, 1996) -- Gordon Mayer, president and chief executive officer of Geoworks (NASDAQ: GWRX), envisions a day when people using next-generation cellular smart phones will tap the Internet to schedule airline tickets, monitor stock prices, read e-mail, and stay in touch with friends, family and business colleagues - literally anytime, anywhere.

Mayer, whose company is rapidly establishing an aggressive worldwide leadership position in the emerging market for smart phones, will outline this vision at the Executive Smart Phone Forum during the CTIA's Wireless Apps '96 conference in Las Vegas on October 6-9. Joining other communications industry luminaries, Mayer will describe the future of accessing the Internet with handheld devices.

"The evolution of delivering information anytime, anywhere has reached an exciting juncture with the delivery of the Nokia 9000 Communicator to the European market," said Mayer. The Nokia 9000 is the world's first available smart phone, and is based on Geoworks' GEOS(R) operating system software. "The delivery of this advanced product marks a major milestone. We are beginning to see the promise of anytime, anywhere information shift from a computing-centric to a communications-centric model."

Smart phones are next-generation, digital cellular telephones that integrate voice and data transmission capabilities, including voice, e-mail, facsimile, and Internet access to content and services within one handheld device. The emerging smart phone market, combined with the power of the Internet, radically changes communications by bringing consumers information wherever and whenever they want it. At the same time, content and service providers recognize the need to customize Internet information and translate it into a usable, appealing format for smart phone users. Geoworks has already partnered with content providers, such as the HotWired Network, to provide news and information in a form customized for smart phone users.

"More people today are looking to access Internet-based information from wherever they are," said Andrew Anker, CEO of the HotWired Network. "By establishing a partnership with Geoworks, we hope to provide HotWired's original content, customized for smart phone users, to the growing number of individuals who want to quickly and easily access our information - news or entertainment - in a variety of different formats."
