Geoworks allies with Puma

GEOWORKS AND PUMA FORM ALLIANCE TO PROVIDE DATA-EXCHANGE, SYNCHRONIZATION CAPABILITIES FOR EMERGING MOBILE COMMUNICATING DEVICES

Solutions to enable data exchange between smart phones, organizers and desktop PCs, notebooks, laptops and printers.

ALAMEDA, Calif. (September 25, 1996) - Geoworks (Nasdaq: GWRX), developer of GEOS operating system software, and Puma Technology, one of the industry's leading suppliers of mobile data exchange, wireless infrared (IR) connectivity and content-aware data synchronization solutions, today announced a long-term, strategic alliance to build unique, best-of-breed connectivity solutions for GEOS-based smart phones and organizer devices. The companies will share technology in order to develop data synchronization solutions between desktop PCs and emerging, high-end mobile communicating devices such as the recently released Nokia 9000 Communicator.

Recognizing that it will be important for customers of handheld communicators to share data, both companies also plan to propose a series of standard data-exchange formats to ease data sharing and synchronization. The first proposed standard will be electronic data exchange software enabling users to create, exchange and store personal information in a unique electronic format. The solution will provide users with the ability to transfer information over wireless IR, serial and parallel cable, and across e-mail connections.

"In order to maintain a leadership position within the consumer computing device market, GEOS-based devices need to provide customers with superior connectivity and synchronization solutions...today and in the future," said Chris Noble, vice president of business development at Geoworks. "Hands down, Puma has the best technology available to meet this growing customer need." "With innovative mobile communicating devices, like smart phones, enabling access to a wealth of information anytime, anywhere, there will be an increased need for people to synchronize their personal data on the mobile device with the information on their desktops," said Brad Rowe, president and CEO of Puma. "Our alliance with Geoworks is intended to provide quick and easy methods to synchronize this important data, simplifying life for the mobile professional."
