Companies Work Together to promote growth of "Smart Phone" Market.
LAS VEGAS, Nev. (October 7, 1996) -- Unwired Planet[TM], Inc. (UP), http://www.uplanet.com and Geoworks (NASDAQ: GWRX) will team up to offer integrated technologies that will combine UP's advanced Mobile Intranet and Internet access with Geoworks' graphical operating system technologies for low, mid and high end smart cellular phones.
Geoworks and UP are working in tandem to develop solutions that will combine UPUs ground-breaking UP.Link platform with GeoworksU operating system. Geoworks has endorsed the cornerstone of the UP.Link platform, Handheld Device Markup Language (HDML). HDML is designed to meet the constraints of small pocket-size devices: a few lines of display, a limited keypad, limited memory, and a wireless connection to private networks and the Internet. The GEOS operating systemUs architecture offers breadth, efficiency and functionality; together these technologies will allow manufacturers to build next-generation smart cellular phones at an affordable cost. The same applications and information will be able to run on a range of smart phones from small, inexpensive phones with few lines of display to larger, more capable smart phones.
"We are pleased to be working with UP to develop an integrated solution for wireless devices," said Gordon Mayer, president and CEO of Geoworks. "With UPUs open protocols, smart phones built with our GEOS operating system platform have access to up-to-the minute information from the Internet or a company intranet."
Unwired Planet and Geoworks will continue to work with leading hardware manufacturers and cellular carriers to provide cell phones with wireless Internet and intranet access at a competitive price.
"Our alliance with Geoworks will afford us the opportunity to strengthen the smart phone market," said Alain Rossmann, CEO and chairman of Unwired Planet. "Now end-users will be able to choose from a wide range of mobile phone products with the core feature of mobile intranet and Internet access."
Unwired Planet was founded in 1994 to deliver an open platform for wireless Internet appliances. UP's first product is a comprehensive communications platform, including browser, server, and mark-up language, that allows familiar mobile devices such as cellular phones and pagers to access and send information through the Internet or intranet and existing wireless data networks quickly and cost-efficiently. Ameritech, AT&T Wireless, Bell Atlantic NYNEX Mobile, Comcast Cellular, and GTE Mobilnet are preparing to deploy UP's technology later this year. UP is headquartered in Redwood Shores, Calif.
